The mottling is the point: unlike a flat solid, the tonal variation gives the surface something to look at while staying quiet enough to sit behind a busier print. On a strong color like Wagon Red that matters more than usual — a flat red of this saturation can dominate a quilt top, while a mottled one carries the same warmth with the intensity broken up across the surface.
The fabric works three ways in a project. As a background it gives piecing room to breathe without the flatness of a solid, particularly in Christmas, Americana and farmhouse palettes where a warm red is often the anchor.
