Shades in Christmas Green is a mottled print quilting cotton from Riley Blake Designs, made from 100% cotton. The mottling is the point: unlike a flat solid, the tonal variation gives the surface something to look at while staying quiet enough to sit behind a busier print. On a deep green it also reads convincingly as foliage, which is why a mottled green earns its place in tree, wreath and pine motifs where a flat solid would look cut from paper.
The fabric works three ways in a project. As a background it gives piecing room to breathe, and a Christmas green is the standard partner to a warm red in holiday quilts, table runners and advent projects. As binding it defines an edge firmly, which suits a seasonal quilt built on strong contrast. And on its own it holds as a feature fabric when the construction is doing the visual work.
