Shades in Celestial is a mottled print quilting cotton from Riley Blake Designs, made from 100% cotton. The mottling is the point: unlike a flat solid, the tonal variation gives the surface something to look at while staying quiet enough to sit behind a busier print. On a blue like Celestial the variation reads almost like sky or water, which is why a mottled blue tends to be the fabric quilters reach for when a scene needs a background rather than a pattern.
The fabric works three ways in a project. As a background it gives piecing room to breathe, and blue is the default choice for sky in landscape, nautical and celestial-themed quilts, as well as for baby quilts and anything with a cool palette. As binding it frames a quilt cleanly without the hardness of a dark neutral. And on its own it holds as a feature fabric when the construction is doing the visual work.
