Shades in Aqua is a mottled print quilting cotton from Riley Blake Designs, made from 100% cotton. The mottling is the point: unlike a flat solid, the tonal variation gives the surface something to look at while staying quiet enough to sit behind a busier print. On a light, cool color like aqua that variation does real work — it keeps a large expanse from reading as blank, so the fabric can cover a lot of a quilt top without going flat.
The fabric works three ways in a project. As a background it gives piecing room to breathe, and aqua is a natural choice for coastal, baby and spring palettes, or anywhere you want cool open space between warmer prints. As binding it finishes an edge softly rather than framing it hard, which suits a quilt with a light overall palette. And on its own it holds as a feature fabric when the construction is doing the visual work. Beyond quilting, it suits bag linings, pouches and table linens.
