Monarch in Grove takes a cheerful floral and scales it up for extra-wide yardage. Oversized blooms in teal, green, yellow, orange, and blue sit against a deep green ground, warm colors lifting off the darker background while the greens settle into it. The result is a backing with real presence, colorful enough to stand on its own behind a simpler quilt top.
The fabric is quilting cotton printed 108 inches wide. A standard 42- to 44-inch print takes two or three seams to cover a quilt back, and those seams add bulk, eat up time, and can pull the backing out of square. At 108 inches, one width handles most quilt sizes by itself. Large-scale florals suit the format especially well, since the blooms have room to run at full size without a seam cutting through them.
