Ketan in Sunburst is a hand-dyed cotton batik from the Banyan Batiks Studio for Northcott. Ketan is one of the Banyan Batiks essentials, a group of basics offered in dozens of colors and intended to blend with the more heavily patterned Banyan collections.
The print is a small-scale, rice-like texture rather than a defined motif, so from a short distance it reads almost as a solid with gentle movement. That makes it easy to cut into small pieces without losing anything important in the design, and it works well in sashing, small appliqué shapes, and scrappy blocks.
Because Ketan comes in so many colorways, it is easy to build a coordinated set; Sunburst can be combined with other Ketan shades for a controlled scrappy look or used alone for sashing, borders, and binding.
Batiks are known for their tightly woven cotton base, which holds crisp edges for fusible appliqué. As with any hand-dyed fabric, color can vary slightly from bolt to bolt, so buy enough for one project at a time, and prewashing is a good idea before mixing it with lighter fabrics.
