This is a Creative Grids quilting ruler, an 8-1/2 inch square measuring 8-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches overall, made in the USA from acrylic. The square format suits small to medium blocks, and it is one of the sizes quilters reach for most: large enough to trim a finished 8 inch block with seam allowance, small enough to handle comfortably one-handed while cutting. Markings are printed in black and white on a 1 inch grid, subdivided into 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch increments, with the whole layout designed for reading against any fabric rather than getting lost on a busy print.
Several features do specific jobs. The Creative Grids non-slip grip lets the ruler slide freely until you apply pressure, at which point it holds and stops the ruler walking mid-cut. Black numbers on white dots with the 1/4 inch grip sides cut whole inches, while the Turn-a-Round feature uses white numbers on black dots and the 1/2 inch grip sides to cut half inches without recalculating. Dashed 1/4 inch lines on two adjoining sides help trim seam allowances, a 45 degree diagonal handles half-square triangles, and centred horizontal and vertical lines square up four-patch, embroidered and appliquéd blocks.
