Gravel is a quilting cotton from the 24/7: Linen collection by Hoffman Fabrics. Despite the collection name, the fabric is 100% cotton — the design is a screenprint that mimics the woven texture of linen rather than being linen itself. It measures approximately 44 inches wide and is sold as yardage, cut to length from the bolt.
That printed texture is what makes the line useful. It gives a solid-looking fabric the visual weight of a woven linen without the shifting, fraying and pressing quirks that come with sewing actual linen. In a quilt it behaves like any quilting cotton: it presses flat, holds a crease, and cuts cleanly on the bias. The effect works particularly well as a background or a border, where the subtle texture keeps a large area from reading as flat, and in bag making, where a linen look is often wanted but a cotton hand is easier to sew.
